Counselor's Corner

What is the role of a school counselor?

My job is to make sure that all our students are academically, socially, and emotionally successful at school. I collaborate with teachers, students, and parents to facilitate a positive school environment. I will present guidance lessons that cover a variety of topics related to character development and social/emotional learning. I also will work with students individually and in a small group setting based on specific needs. I look forward to getting to know each student and building positive relationships!

  • School Guidance Curriculum - designing, structuring, and delivering classroom lessons designed to achieve specific competencies in all grades PK-5 (personal/social, academic, career) and driven by the needs of the school population.
  • Individual Student Planning - assisting students with goal formation/planning (behavioral, academic, etc.)
  • Responsive Services - meeting immediate student needs (counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, referral, peer mediation, information-providing)
  • System Support - school-wide program planning and implementation as well as consulting with other professionals and/or coordination of various supports for students and families.
  • Referrals - I help facilitate referrals for Special Education, Section 504, or a variety of therapeutic services offered through the district.

About Mrs. Qualls
Hello Knights! My name is Jordan Qualls, and I am proud to be your Maxine Phelan Elementary School Counselor! I began my Lamar CISD journey as a classroom teacher almost 10 years ago before helping open Phelan Elementary. I am a lifelong resident of Fort Bend County, graduating from Fort Bend ISD, then going on to receive my bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston (Go COOGS!) and my master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas. Outside of my career, I enjoy spending time with my husband Dakota and our two children, Rory June and Christian. I am also a PROUD member of the Avahi Kingdom here at Phelan! My goal is for every Knight who walks through our doors to know that they are safe and loved at Phelan Elementary.

I am excited to implement our district character education program here at Phelan Elementary. Character Counts embraces the 6 pillars of character which will be focused on through lessons and activities around campus. For more information, you can visit the CHARACTER COUNTS! website. Our district also utilizes a Responsive Counselor curriculum that focuses on more skill-based social-emotional lessons as well.

Character Counts Pillars:

  1. Trustworthiness (September)
  2. Respect (October)
  3. Responsibility (November/December)
  4. Fairness (January/February)
  5. Caring (March)
  6. Citizenship (April/May)

The No Place for Hate® initiative provides educators and students with the resources to ensure that anti-bias and diversity education are an integral part of the school curriculum.  No Place for Hate® also helps to create and sustain inclusive school environments where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual difference while challenging bigotry and prejudice.  Launched in schools in 2001, the popular initiative has been embraced by hundreds of campuses throughout the Southwest region, including many in the Houston, Austin/Central Texas and El Paso areas.
